Some wilderness highlights ...

January 08

On the 8th of January 9 brave students headed out for 4 weeks of intensive guide training. The students where there to attain their FGASA level 1 and BOTA trainee guide qualification that would allow them to work on attachment with a mentor guide.

In this time they would walk into situations with potentialy dangerous game, learn to handle and speed-shoot a high calibre rifle, sleep beneath the stars with mating lions calling from a mere hundred meters away and on top of all of that they had to swot Astronomy, Geology, Mammals, Birds, Weather and Climate and much more. December 07...

Four already qualified guides from diverse background headed into the Okavango Wilderness area of the Kwapa River for a preparation for the FGASA level3 exam and a walking and weapons qualification.

On walking and weapons courses tracking potentially dangerous game on foot and doing a number of safe entry and extractions per student is key to the success of the course. More critical however is the weapons and safety drills. For more about what happened on this course click below...

November 07

Known as the "Land of Giants", Tuli is truly one of the most amazing wilderness areas of southern Africa. It was at our camp adjacent to Tuli Safari Lodge where we were based for our Level 1 and 2 course. With an array of trainees from Limpopo Valley Horse Safaris, Mopane Camp (South Africa), Tuli Safari Lodge and some international students thrown in for good measure we began our training. Several would extend the course for a further 10 days to do a walking and weapons qualification. For more about what transpired click below...

September 07...

A group of super motivated students headed into the Kwapa River wilderness area of the Okavango to begin their training.

The typical day consisted of early morning explorations in the field searching for wildlife while slowly identifying and learning about the more common birds, trees, flowers and insects and ecology that would give the base knowledge the learners would need to be come ell rounded guides.
Returning to camp for theoretical lessons, brunch, a swim and further lessons to prepare for the afternoon game drives or walks, the learners took turns in leading the guided experience in order to practice for final assessments toward the end of the course. February 2007

Hosted by Tuli Safari Lodge but with students from many other walks of life the course was focused for the FGASA and BOTA level 1. With a good mix of classroom time and field time there were some great excursions to locations such as Shalimpo (the confluence of the Shashe and Limpopo Rivers) and Solomon's Wall (see the image left)
