Wildlife

The changing seasons bring flooding, receding waters and rain, resulting in an impressive diversity of wildlife fluctuating and moving within the area. Each season brings rich concentrations of different species in the floodplains or the mixed woodlands.
 
Large and small mammals, migrant and resident bird species even the legendary Big Five call this region home. You can expect to see and interact with a wide variety of animals including: elephant, buffalo, (rare sightings of rhino), giraffe, hippo, impala, kudu, tsessebe , wildebeest, zebra, warthog and smaller antelope, as well as lion, leopard, spotted hyena, cheetah and wild dog. The bird count during summer is well over 350 species. The permanent water ensures high concentrations of hippo and crocodiles and the possibility of identifying some of the 83 species of fish that occur in the crystal clear channels of the Okavango.

 

Accommodation

The Okavango Training Camp is our most adventurous and rustic training camp set up as a typical mobile safari. Set amongst tall riverine trees on a beautiful island you will overlook the seasonal floodplains of the Okavango.
 
Your home-away-from-home will be a 2-sleeper dome tent with stretcher beds and on-suite pit latrines. Shared hot bucket showers are placed around the camp, but water storage logistics limit each person to one shower a day. A splash stand of water is provided for each tent for early morning wake-ups and wash-ups when arriving back from the wild. You will gather in our central lecture room and mess tent area for theoretical learning sessions and enjoy your meals in the open in the shade of our spectacular trees.

You will enjoy three wholesome and healthy meals a day with high tea and snacks where necessary. Early morning starts are complimented with a continental breakfast around the fire. Brunch time consists of a mixture between a hot breakfast and lunch, followed by high tea in the mid afternoon. Your dinner will be served around the fire providing home-style cooking to end each busy day. We cater for most dietary requirements, and soft drinks and alcohol are available at our cash bar.
